Low Budget Honeymoon: La Paz, Mexico

Updated: Jan 29, 2019

Hello Friends!

I am SO excited to share the details of our honeymoon with you!

Adam and I were gifted the most beautiful tropical getaway by Adam’s close family friends! They generously allowed us to stay at their beach front villa in La Paz, Mexico. They also helped us plan our travel arrangements.

TRAVEL

We woke up at the crack of dawn and drove to the San Diego and Tijuana border. We parked our car at the San Diego border parking lot and walked into customs and used our bridge tickets to cross the bridge strait into the Tijuana airport. We had a short three hour flight to La Paz, Mexico. When we arrived our family friends had made arrangements for their trusted driver to pick us up. He took us to the grocery store on the way to the villa so we could get some staples for our 2 week trip. When we were driving to the villa it looked like a desert climate outside the car window. Once we reached the gated community that are Villa was in I was shocked at how beautiful the hidden gem was.

THE VILLA

Once we reached the villa it was like we entered a little slice of heaven. It was a view strait out of a magazine; white sandy beaches and crystal blue water. The villa we stayed at was in a gated community with a private beach, beach club, and marina that featured restaurants and stores. There was also a hotel in the gated community as well. I liked the hotel below! https://www.costabajaresort.com/

The villa had 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and was stocked with water sport equipment. The Villa’s back door opened up to a beautiful view of the Sea of Cortez. The water was crystal blue and warm.

ACTIVITIES

We spent the majority of our time at the beach club because it was free and relaxing. The beach club had a restaurant and bar. There was a variety of activities on the beach including a gym, volleyball court, tennis, soccer, and ping pong. We also enjoyed kayaking and stand up paddle boarding almost every day.

EXCURSION

Excursions can get pricey, and we only had it in the budget for one. Look into all of your options and choose what will give you the most bang for your buck. We did an all day excursion that included an hour boat ride, snorkeling with sea lions, and lunch on a private island. The private island included free activities like stand up paddle board, kayaking, and snorkeling. We took a boat ride about an hour out to a huge sea lion colony. We put on wet suits and bravely jumped in to swim with the sea lions. It was absolutely amazing to be so close to such awesome animals. From there we took the boat to a private uninhabited island. There was only a pop-up kitchen and lounge furniture on the island. We ate a yummy fresh fish lunch and relaxed. Adam and I were blown away at how beautiful and crystal blue the water was. We went snorkeling some more and saw some amazing fish!

DINNING

Since we were on a budget we went to the grocery store and purchased items to cook our own breakfast, lunch, and snacks at our villa. We kept it simple with eggs, veggies, fruit, popcorn, and chips and dip. This saved us a ton of money over the course of the trip. However, we did eat our every night for dinner. We experienced amazing 5 star cuisine on this trip. We were given a list of all of the top places to dine at and they did not disappoint. Every meal was absolutely delicious and so fresh. The marina where our villa was located had a few really tasty restaurants that we frequented often. In addition, there was a free shuttle that took people in the villas into the city. We went into the city for dinner a few times and to our surprise everywhere we went had people who spoke perfect English which was very helpful, since Adam and I know very little Spanish.

EXPERIENCE

The weather was in the mid 80's and sunny for our entire trip. The water was clear, warm, and we had an absolute blast. We spent our days enjoying drinks by the pool and doing fun recreational activities. I loved that La Paz was a hidden gem, with very little tourist traffic. It was very affordable and absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed celebrating our marriage in such a gorgeous destination. We will definitely visit again.
